Zelenskyy and US reach agreement on security guarantees

DAVOS, SWITZERLAND — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that a formal consensus has been reached with the United States regarding strategic security guarantees for the post-war era.

Speaking to reporters at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Zelenskyy stated that the document addressing Ukraine's security needs is now "completed" following negotiations with a US delegation led by President Trump. While both parties have agreed on the framework, the Ukrainian leader clarified that the official signing will only take place once the war has ended. Following the signing, the guarantees must be ratified by the parliaments of both the United States and Ukraine to take full effect.

Long-term defense and parliamentary ratification

For Ukraine, securing these guarantees is a cornerstone of any future peace negotiations to prevent potential future Russian aggression. Zelenskyy previously noted that the US had proposed a security framework spanning 15 years. The finalized document represents a move toward concrete, long-term military and diplomatic commitments that will serve as a safeguard once active hostilities cease.

Strategic shifts in the Arctic and Greenland

Parallel to the Ukrainian negotiations, US President Donald Trump announced that a separate "agreement framework" regarding Greenland and the broader Arctic region has been established. Following what he described as a "very productive" meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump moved away from his previous threats of imposing tariffs on European allies who had opposed US plans for the island.

Trump emphasized that Greenland is of vital strategic importance for both national and international security, particularly in the realm of missile defense. While the US President called for immediate negotiations to secure the territory's ownership, NATO Secretary-General Rutte noted that the current framework focuses on Arctic security rather than Danish sovereignty over the island.

Global leadership and the "new world order"

The announcements come amid broader discussions at Davos regarding a shifting global order. Russian President Vladimir Putin weighed in on the Greenland debate, suggesting that the territory could be valued between 200 million and 1 billion dollars, depending on gold price calculations. Meanwhile, European leaders, including EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, warned that the world is increasingly being defined by "brute force," urging the European Union to strengthen its own economic and defense capabilities.
