DEM Party MP Çandar: Demirtaş Could Be Released This Weekend

WISE NEWS PRESS / DUHOK, IRAQ — NOVEMBER 18, 2025

DEM Party Member of Parliament Cengiz Çandar claimed in an interview from Duhok, Iraq, that former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş has a "very strong likelihood" of being released from prison this weekend or next week.

Çandar, who attended the Peace and Security Forum, stressed that Demirtaş's freedom is critical to the fate of the ongoing 'peace process' in Turkey. He also detailed legislative steps expected to follow the withdrawal of PKK forces from the Zap region.

Demirtaş’s Release Critical for Peace Process

Speaking to Rûdaw, Çandar emphasized that without the release of the prominent Kurdish political figure, efforts towards peace would be meaningless.

"There is a very strong likelihood of him being released this weekend or next week. This is very important because if he doesn't get out of prison, all these things we are saying and discussing are for nothing. If Demirtaş remains in prison, it means there is no peace process in Turkey," Çandar stated.

The MP’s statement comes amidst high political tension following the PKK's recent announcement that it was withdrawing its forces, including those from the critical Zap region near the Turkish border.

Legislative Steps Expected in Parliament

Çandar indicated that the PKK has already taken steps toward de-escalation by not only declaring disarmament but also by removing its remaining units from Turkey and emptying areas in the Zap region. He stated that the state must now take corresponding steps through legislation.

Çandar outlined the activities of the special commission established in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM), which includes members from nearly all political parties:

  • Commission Work: The commission has been working since August 5 and held 17 meetings. They are scheduled to hear from the Foreign Minister, Interior Minister, and MIT Chief before writing a final report.

  • Anticipated Bills: Based on the report, two legislative proposals are expected to be submitted to the Parliament:

    1. To enable disarmed PKK members to return to Turkey and participate in social and political life.

    2. To end the sentences of imprisoned or exiled PKK members for their integration into society.
