THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS — Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius, leader of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), has confirmed she will assume the dual roles of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense in the incoming Dutch government.
Following days of internal deliberations regarding the allocation of cabinet positions, Yeşilgöz announced her new portfolio, signaling a strong focus on national security and military readiness for the Netherlands.
'Freedom is not self-evident'
In a statement regarding her appointment, Yeşilgöz expressed that leading the defense ministry is a significant responsibility. She highlighted the current geopolitical climate, noting that the safety citizens enjoy is fragile.
"Daily we see how our freedom and our life in safety are not self-evident," Yeşilgöz stated. "Therefore, it is a great honor and a privilege to get to work as Minister of Defense."
Protecting against future threats
The incoming minister outlined her strategic vision for the department. She emphasized the need to build a country that "stands firmly on its own legs" and is capable of protecting itself against the threats of both today and tomorrow.
Yeşilgöz also acknowledged the human element of the portfolio, pledging her commitment to the service members of the Dutch armed forces. She stated she looks forward to being responsible for "the men and women who defend our country and our freedom daily."
