Explosion rocks Russian tanker in Black Sea: Rescue operation underway

WISE NEWS PRESS / KOCAELI, TURKEY — Nov. 28, 2025

A major rescue operation has been launched off the coast of Kandira, Turkey, after an explosion and subsequent fire occurred on a Russian oil tanker navigating the Black Sea.

The incident took place approximately 28 miles off the coast of Kefken as the vessel, identified as the KAIROS, was en route to the Russian port of Novorossiysk. While initial reports suggest the explosion may have been caused by a drifting sea mine, official investigations are ongoing.

Crew reported safe amid rescue efforts

The Turkish Directorate General of Maritime Affairs issued a statement confirming the incident. Authorities received a distress signal indicating a fire had broken out due to an "external factor."

"The empty tanker KAIROS, sailing to Russia's Novorossiysk port, reported a fire caused by an external impact 28 miles off our coast. The condition of the 25 personnel on board is good," the statement read. Turkish rescue units were immediately dispatched to the zone to evacuate the sailors and monitor the situation.

Speculation regarding sea mine collision

While the official cause has not yet been definitively confirmed, local sources and initial reports speculate that the explosion may have been triggered by the ship striking a sea mine. The Black Sea has seen an increase in drifting mines due to the ongoing conflict in the region, posing risks to commercial shipping near the Bosphorus Strait.

The vessel is reported to be at risk of sinking, prompting an urgent response to prevent environmental damage and ensure crew safety.

Naval and medical teams dispatched

The Kocaeli Governor's Office announced that all available resources have been mobilized. "A fire of undetermined cause occurred on a foreign-flagged ship off Kandira Kefken. Coastal Safety, Coast Guard, National Medical Rescue Teams (UMKE), and ambulance crews have been directed to the scene," the statement said.

Additionally, it was reported that the Turkish Naval Forces Command has deployed two ships and a patrol aircraft to the region to assist in the operation.
