Parliamentary immunity files concerning a total of 11 members of the Turkish Parliament, including CHP Chairman Özgür Özel and DEM Party Co-Chair Tülay Hatimoğulları, have been officially submitted to the TBMM Presidency.

The files, formally known as Presidential motions regarding the Lifting of Legislative Immunity, have been forwarded by the Parliament Presidency to the Joint Commission, which is comprised of members from the Constitutional and Justice Commissions. This development marks the formal beginning of a legal process that will determine whether the immunity of the named MPs will be lifted, allowing potential prosecution.

Key Opposition Figures Included

The list of MPs whose files were forwarded to the Joint Commission includes leaders and prominent figures from across the opposition:

  • CHP Chairman and Manisa MP Özgür Özel

  • DEM Party Co-Chair and Adana MP Tülay Hatimoğulları

  • CHP Sakarya MP Ümit Dikbayır

  • CHP Ordu MP Mustafa Adıgüzel

  • CHP Zonguldak MP Deniz Yavuzyılmaz

  • Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP) Istanbul MP Ahmet Şık

  • DEM Party MPs: Kamuran Tanhan (Mardin), Sabahat Erdoğan Sarıtaş (Siirt), Onur Düşünmez (Hakkari), Nevroz Uysal Aslan (Şırnak), and Zeynep Oduncu Kutevi (Batman).

Parliamentary Procedure

Under current Turkish legal regulations, immunity files are first submitted to the TBMM Presidency. They are then sent to the Joint Commission for detailed examination and review.

The Joint Commission prepares its opinion and recommendations and submits them to the TBMM General Assembly (Genel Kurul). The final decision on whether to lift an MP's immunity is determined by a vote in the General Assembly, which ultimately clarifies the legal status of the named parliamentarians.
