ANKARA, TURKEY — The Turkish Ministry of National Defense announced Monday that a ballistic missile fired from Iran was intercepted by NATO defense systems over the southern province of Gaziantep.

The interception, which resulted in no casualties, occurred shortly after the United States Embassy issued a Level 4 travel warning and ordered the immediate evacuation of non-emergency personnel from its Adana Consulate due to escalating regional security threats.

NATO intercepts Iranian missile

According to EuroNews, the Turkish Ministry of National Defense (MSB) confirmed that the ballistic munition entered Turkish airspace before being neutralized by NATO air and missile defense elements stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean. Debris from the intercepted missile fell into empty fields in Gaziantep, causing no injuries or loss of life.

In its official statement, the ministry emphasized Turkey's commitment to good neighborly relations and regional stability. However, the MSB issued a stern warning that Ankara will "resolutely and unhesitatingly take all necessary steps against any threat" directed at its territory and airspace. The ministry reminded all regional actors that complying with these warnings is in everyone's best interest.

US issues Level 4 travel warning and evacuates staff

Just moments before the MSB's announcement, the US Embassy in Ankara urged its citizens to completely avoid traveling to southern Turkey. In a public statement broadcasted on the X platform, the embassy officially elevated the travel advisory for southeastern Turkey to a "Level 4 - Do Not Travel" status.

Consequently, the US State Department directed the precautionary departure of all non-emergency US government employees and their eligible family members from the Adana Consulate on March 9, 2026. This sudden evacuation underscores growing concerns over potential military escalations and prioritizing the safety of American citizens operating near the active conflict zones.
