Iranian President Pezeshkian reveals $1,000 salary, decries economic crisis

GORGAN, IRAN —  Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, while visiting Golestan Province, highlighted the country's severe currency devaluation by revealing his monthly salary is approximately $1,000, significantly less than equivalent past government roles.

Speaking at a meeting to evaluate the progress of the medical referral system, Pezeshkian used his own financial standing to illustrate the depth of the national economic crisis. He noted that the plummeting value of the national currency has drastically altered the standard of living for all citizens, including the highest levels of government.

Economic comparison: Then and now

During his address, Pezeshkian recalled his time as Deputy Minister of Health during the administration of former President Muhammad Khatami. He shared an anecdote about two married doctors working late into the night in a village because they were "well-paid" at the time.

"At that time, 6,000 tomans was equivalent to $6,000," Pezeshkian remarked. "With the loss of the currency's value, today I receive a salary of $1,000 as president. This is where the problem lies."

Focus on healthcare budgeting

Beyond his personal salary, Pezeshkian emphasized the need for structural changes in the health sector. He argued that despite economic hardships, the government must prioritize preventive measures and local health centers. The President called for a "serious and proper" budget for these areas, suggesting that better budgeting could lead to more stable and efficient contracts with medical institutions.

Personal finances and campaign debts

This is not the first time Pezeshkian has been transparent about his finances. In September 2024, he responded to journalists' questions regarding his campaign spending and salary. He admitted he had no personal funds for a campaign office and relied on supporters who provided help, including loans in dollars that he eventually paid back.

Regarding his current income, Pezeshkian stated he is not driven by wealth:

  • He receives approximately 60–70 million tomans (roughly $1,000) per month.

  • He admitted he does not actively track or check his salary deposits.

  • The President claimed he has no personal need for the money, as his period of "chasing wealth and status" has passed.

  • His primary stated goal is the comfort and dignity of the Iranian people.
