Kremlin: Drone attack is a terrorist act, Russia to harden stance
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov condemned a drone attempt on Putin's residence as a "terrorist act" aimed at sabotaging peace talks, signaling a tougher Russian stance.
WISE NEWS PRESS / MOSCOW, RUSSIA — DEC. 31, 2025
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has labeled a drone attempt on President Vladimir Putin’s official residence a "terrorist act," warning that Moscow will significantly harden its stance in future negotiations with Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters in Moscow, Peskov asserted that the attempted strike was a direct provocation intended to derail diplomatic efforts and the ongoing negotiation process. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has denied involvement, the Kremlin dismissed these denials as "absurd," further accusing certain Western media outlets of spreading misinformation to protect the Kyiv administration. Consequently, Russian officials stated that the incident would lead to "diplomatic consequences" in the form of a much more rigid negotiating position.
Air defense systems successfully intercepted drones
The Kremlin spokesperson confirmed that the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) used in the attempt were neutralized by Russian air defense systems. Although Peskov did not provide specific technical details regarding the hardware, he emphasized that the military is currently handling the drone wreckage. Addressing calls for public evidence, Peskov remarked that the incident speaks for itself and that military authorities are managing the investigation with the necessary sensitivity.
Accusations of sabotaging international peace efforts
Peskov argued that the timing of the incident was calculated to sabotage not only Russian interests but also international peace initiatives. He specifically claimed the act was intended as a message to U.S. President Donald Trump, who has expressed interest in facilitating a peaceful resolution to the conflict. "This action is not only directed against Putin but also targets President Trump’s efforts to encourage a diplomatic solution," Peskov stated, characterizing the move as a deliberate sabotage of the global peace agenda.
Russia signals shift to a "harder" diplomatic position
The incident marks a potential turning point in Moscow's diplomatic strategy. Peskov made it clear that the Kremlin will no longer approach talks with the same flexibility, stating that the "terrorist" nature of the attack has made a shift in their position inevitable. According to Russian officials, the hardening of their stance is a direct response to what they perceive as Kyiv's lack of interest in sincere diplomacy, casting a long shadow over future peace prospects.
