BUCHAREST, Romania — Russia’s Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev warned that drone incidents involving European countries could continue, saying EU citizens “will not sleep peacefully.”
The remarks, reported by DW Turkish, came after Romania said a Russian drone entered its airspace during Moscow’s overnight attacks on Ukraine and struck an apartment building in the Galati area, injuring two people.
Medvedev warns Europe over drone incidents
Medvedev said the first step should be to determine which country the drone belonged to. However, he also accused European leaders of taking part directly in the war against Russia by supporting Ukraine.
He argued that European countries had no right to express outrage over such incidents while weapons, drone components and intelligence from Europe were being used against Russia.
“Be ready: this will continue,” Medvedev said, adding that people in EU countries would also feel the consequences of the ongoing war.
Moscow rejects accusations
Russia’s Foreign Ministry rejected the accusations that Russian drones had violated European airspace.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, quoted by Russia’s RIA news agency, said the claims against Moscow were “completely unfounded.” She argued that no evidence, material or proof had been presented to support the allegations.
Moscow has repeatedly denied responsibility in similar incidents, while European governments have accused Russia of reckless behavior as its war against Ukraine increasingly affects neighboring NATO and EU countries.
Romania asks NATO for anti-drone support
Romania, a member of both NATO and the European Union, accused Russia of a serious violation of international law after the incident near the Ukrainian border.
Bucharest requested rapid NATO support for anti-drone technologies for the Romanian military. The incident has increased concern over the vulnerability of border regions as Russian attacks continue across Ukraine.
Galati, located near Ukraine, has been one of the areas where spillover risks from the war have drawn growing attention from Romanian authorities and NATO officials.
NATO says it is ready to defend allies
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the alliance was ready to defend every inch of allied territory.
Rutte said NATO would continue strengthening its deterrence and defense posture against all threats, including those posed by unmanned aerial vehicles. He described Russia’s behavior as a danger to all allies and said Moscow’s war against Ukraine does not stop at Ukraine’s borders.
The alliance has been under increasing pressure to reinforce air defense and drone response systems along its eastern flank.
EU and Germany express solidarity with Romania
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Russia’s war of aggression had crossed another line and expressed full solidarity with Romania and its people.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also said NATO allies were ready to defend every inch of allied territory. In a post on X, Merz described the drone violation as another sign of Russia’s willingness to escalate tensions.
He said Germany stood with its NATO allies and stressed the need for a stronger NATO posture on the eastern flank.
Drone war raises wider security concerns
The latest incident comes as drone warfare remains central to Russia’s war against Ukraine. Both sides have relied heavily on unmanned systems, while European countries have increased military assistance to Kyiv.
Medvedev’s comments are likely to deepen tensions between Moscow and European capitals, particularly as NATO members seek stronger air defense capabilities and faster responses to aerial threats near the alliance’s borders.
For Romania and other eastern NATO members, the incident underscores a broader security concern: Russia’s attacks on Ukraine are no longer seen only as a battlefield issue but as a direct risk to European territory and civilians.
