ANKARA, TÜRKİYE — Conventional diplomatic decorum in the Turkish capital has been replaced by a heated social media confrontation between the Russian and French Embassies, marking a significant escalation in digital diplomacy.
The two diplomatic missions engaged in a sharp exchange on the X platform (formerly Twitter) using Turkish-language posts. The dispute, triggered by statements regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine, quickly devolved into an exchange of historical grievances and heavy accusations, including references to the "Nazi regime" and the "ghosts of 1812." This unconventional public spat reflects the deep-seated tensions between the two nations as the conflict enters its fifth year.
The Spark: Kremlin Statements on Ukraine
The clash began when the Russian Embassy in Ankara shared a post containing statements from Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. The message defended the "special military operation," asserting that its primary goal remains ensuring the security of the people in eastern Ukraine. While Moscow claimed to be open to political and diplomatic solutions, it emphasized that the process depends on the actions of the Kyiv government. The post also included Peskov’s warning that intentions by Paris and London to provide nuclear capabilities to Kyiv would constitute a violation of international law.
France Responds to "Three-Day War" Narrative
The French Embassy in Türkiye was quick to issue a rebuttal. Referencing the initial expectations that the conflict would be a "three-day war," the French mission highlighted that the war is now entering its fifth year. The embassy’s post stated: "We have entered the 5th year of the so-called 3-day war, and yet Russia is still making statements claiming that 'Franco-British deterrence is a threat'."
Historical References and "Nazi" Accusations
Russia’s response to the French rebuttal escalated the tone further. The Russian Embassy criticized the state of French diplomacy, describing their social media activity as "pathetic and miserable." Moscow's representatives further claimed that Paris has been a key supporter of what they termed the "Nazi regime in Kyiv" since 2014, accusing the Ukrainian administration of targeting its own civilian population.

The Russian mission concluded its message with a pointed historical jab: "Perhaps the French government is still haunted by the ghosts of 1812?"—a reference to Napoleon Bonaparte's disastrous invasion of Russia. This exchange underscores how historical narratives are being weaponized in modern digital warfare, moving far beyond traditional closed-door diplomatic channels.
