KYIV, UKRAINE — Russian forces launched a series of deadly missile and drone strikes against Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and other major cities early Thursday, resulting in at least three fatalities and widespread destruction.

The coordinated morning assaults, which heavily damaged residential infrastructure and left over 20 people injured across multiple regions, underscore the escalating civilian toll as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues unabated. First responders are actively navigating the rubble of burning buildings to rescue trapped residents.

Civilian casualties mount in the capital

The strikes on the capital caused significant destruction in densely populated neighborhoods. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the loss of life, noting that the victims included a young child. Taking to the messaging app Telegram, Klitschko stated that as a result of the enemy attack on the capital, two people died—a 12-year-old boy and a 35-year-old woman. He added that ten people were injured, with six of them currently receiving treatment in hospitals.

However, the casualty figures appear to be fluctuating as rescue operations continue. Timur Tkachenko, the head of the capital's military administration, reported that the number of injured in the city had reached 18, including a child.

The air raid alert declared in the capital remained in effect for more than two hours in both Kyiv and Dnipro. Photographs shared online depicted uncontrollable fires and thick plumes of smoke rising into the sky over the city.

Klitschko provided further details on the rescue efforts, noting that emergency teams successfully saved a mother and child from a centrally located building where the ground floor had sustained heavy damage. Furthermore, the mayor reported that a missile struck the sixth floor of an apartment building in the Podil district. In a northern district of the capital, a massive fire broke out in a building, leaving four emergency medical workers injured as debris scattered across various locations.

Attacks extend to Dnipro and Kharkiv

The early morning assault was not limited to the capital. In the southeastern city of Dnipro, Regional Governor Oleksandr Ganzha announced via Telegram that the Russian strikes had set residential buildings ablaze, resulting in the death of one resident. The governor also noted that 10 people were injured in the attacks, sharing photographs that showed residential structures engulfed in flames.

Meanwhile, in Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, located in the northeast, local officials reported that at least two people were injured following a series of targeted drone strikes.
