Turkey Considers Reopening Armenian Border After 31 Years

WISE NEWS PRESS / ANKARA, TURKEY — DEC. 3, 2025

Turkey has placed the option of reopening its land border with Armenia, which has been closed for 31 years, on its agenda, signaling a potential thaw in one of the region's most enduring diplomatic freezes.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Ankara is evaluating a plan to conditionally open the border within the next six months. This move is seen as a strategic step influenced by the recent peace declaration between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as the political calculus surrounding Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan ahead of upcoming elections.

A Gesture for Regional Stability

The border was originally closed in 1993 by Turkey in solidarity with Azerbaijan during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. The current initiative to reverse this policy has gained momentum following a joint peace declaration signed by Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders, reportedly facilitated by US President Donald Trump earlier this year.

Reopening the border is viewed as a significant political boost for Pashinyan as he prepares for elections in June. Reports suggest that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev also views the formalization of a peace treaty favorably if Pashinyan secures a victory. However, Ankara maintains that full normalization with Yerevan is contingent upon the finalization of a comprehensive peace agreement.

Technical Preparations Underway

Signals of a thaw are already visible on the ground. Over the weekend, Turkish and Armenian representatives conducted technical inspections at the Akyaka–Akhurik border gate to assess infrastructure needs.

Experts indicate that while the border could technically be ready for reopening by early 2026, significant work remains. Revitalizing the critical Kars-Gyumri railway line is expected to take approximately five months of rail renewal work. Additionally, Turkey is upgrading patrol roads and security infrastructure in the border region.

The TRIPP Corridor and Energy Routes

Beyond bilateral politics, the move is tied to broader geopolitical ambitions involving energy and trade. A potential peace deal is expected to stabilize the Caucasus energy corridor, which transports oil and gas to Europe.

Under the Trump-backed framework, the US has reportedly secured special rights in developing the "TRIPP" (Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity) corridor. This route, also known as the Zangezur Corridor, aims to connect Azerbaijan to Turkey via Armenia, forming a key link in a new East-West trade route stretching from Beijing to London. Pashinyan has announced that railway construction for this corridor is slated to begin in the second half of 2026.
