DEM Party Spokesperson Ayşegül Doğan has responded to Presidential Advisor Mehmet Uçum's warnings regarding political rhetoric, asserting that the responsibility for constructive language lies with the government as well as the opposition.
As discussions around a "Terror-Free Turkey" continue, the exchange of statements between key political actors has intensified. Mehmet Uçum, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Legal Policies Board, issued a warning against "intellectual sabotage" of the process through divisive language, prompting a swift rebuttal from the DEM Party regarding the mutual nature of political responsibility.
Uçum warns against 'separatist language'
In a written statement, Presidential Advisor Mehmet Uçum emphasized that democratic politics should not be exploited through regionalism. Noting that while constructive language is everyone's responsibility, "it is clear who needs to be most careful," Uçum argued that "intellectual sabotage" of the process through separatist rhetoric must not be permitted.
Highlighting the goal of advancing Turkey's democracy with a holistic perspective, Uçum stated:
"Efforts to produce separatist identity politics and region-based politics containing separatism are unacceptable. The language of arrogance, victory, separatism, and language that highlights fragmentation instead of integration must be strongly rejected."
DEM Party: Government shares the burden
Following Uçum's remarks, DEM Party Spokesperson and Şırnak MP Ayşegül Doğan addressed the ruling wing, pointing to the sensitivity of the ongoing process. Doğan stated that warnings about language should not be perceived as one-sided, adding, "Those who warn us about language must show the same care and approach with the same responsibility."
Doğan stressed that this critical threshold imposes responsibilities not only on the opposition but also on the ruling party, warning against viewing the process as a means for political gain. "We must approach this with a sensitivity that ensures no political party turns this into an area to consolidate its own power. No one should instrumentalize the process by trying to derive different power from it," she concluded.
