Unconscious exercise linked to herniated discs and meniscus
Expert Uz. Dr. İnci Şenses warns that following generic social media exercise videos without clinical evaluation can cause permanent joint and spinal damage.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialist Uz. Dr. İnci Şenses has warned that performing exercises without professional guidance, particularly those popularized on social media, can lead to severe health issues such as herniated discs and meniscus tears.
While exercise is vital for a healthy lifestyle, Dr. Şenses emphasized that generic routines often fail to account for an individual's specific medical history, physical capacity, and spinal health. According to the expert at Memorial Bodrum Hospital, performing standardized movements found in digital videos without a personalized plan significantly increases the risk of acute and chronic injuries.
The Dangers of Improper Plank and Squat Techniques
Dr. Şenses pointed out that injuries are frequently concentrated in popular movements performed with poor form. "Improperly executed planks are a common trigger for herniated discs, while squats performed in the wrong form can lead to meniscus and ligament tears in the knee joint," she stated. Additionally, using incorrect resistance bands can cause significant damage to the shoulder joints.
Why Clinical Evaluation is Essential Before Working Out
Clinical assessment is paramount to safely utilizing the protective benefits of exercise. Dr. Şenses identified three primary errors leading to injuries: starting exercises before diagnosing the cause of existing pain, adopting a "one size fits all" approach, and using incorrect speed or weight loads.
"Exercise parameters such as duration, frequency, and intensity are clinical factors," Dr. Şenses concluded. She urged individuals experiencing pain or mobility issues to consult with a specialist rather than relying on social media content to ensure their fitness routine remains a safe tool for health.
