Age is often considered just a number on an ID card, but modern science is proving that the body does not age as a single unit. According to Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Halil Ertürk, a consultant at Acıbadem Life, genetic factors and lifestyle choices can cause specific organs to age significantly faster than a person’s chronological age.
This discrepancy poses serious risks. For instance, a person whose heart has a biological age significantly older than their chronological age may face heart attack risks that are predictable decades in advance. Similarly, rapidly aging kidneys can serve as early warning signals for future renal failure or cardiovascular issues.
The Reality of Biological Age
Dr. Ertürk explains that while chronological age measures the time passed since birth, biological age acts as an "internal clock" measuring the actual health and wear of cells and tissues.
“One of the prominent methods for calculating biological age is 'epigenetic clocks,' which examine specific CpG sites on DNA,” Dr. Ertürk states. “Chemical markers called methylation on these points change over time. By analyzing patterns in these regions, we can calculate a person’s biological age and how much it deviates from their chronological age.”
Heart at 40, Kidneys at 60
Advancements in technology now allow for the specific aging analysis of individual organs rather than just a whole-body score. Advanced models can independently evaluate the biological ages of the heart, kidneys, liver, brain, and immune system.
“It is possible for a 50-year-old person to have a heart that is biologically 40, kidneys that are 60, and an immune system that is 70 years old,” says Dr. Ertürk. “These differences clearly show the actual extent of the load and wear exposed to organs throughout life.”
Lifestyle Accelerates Organ Aging
Dr. Ertürk emphasizes that stress types accumulated throughout life are major determinants of organ aging speed:

Blood Tests and the Stanford Study
Referring to large-scale cohort studies from Stanford University, Dr. Ertürk notes that machine learning models analyzing thousands of proteins in the blood can now calculate the biological age of 11 different organs.
The findings were striking: approximately 20% of seemingly healthy adults have at least one organ aging faster than expected, and 1–2% have multiple rapidly aging organs. This accelerated aging is linked to a 20–50% increase in mortality rates.
Predicting Risks 10 Years in Advance
The ultimate goal of measuring organ-specific biological age is personalized preventive medicine. Dr. Ertürk highlights the predictive power of these diagnostics:
“If a heart's biological age is significantly older than the chronological age, a heart attack risk can be predicted decades in advance. The aim is not just to say 'your kidney is 80 years old,' but to understand the reasons for this difference. Through nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, and regenerative treatments, we aim to slow down the aging speed of the organ and, if possible, reverse its biological age.”
