Zelenskyy seeks urgent air defense as Russia targets Odesa

WISE NEWS PRESS / ANKARA, TÜRKİYE — 02 JANUARY 2026

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has renewed urgent appeals to the United States for advanced air defense systems as Russian forces intensify drone and missile strikes against the critical port city of Odesa.

The strategic bombardment of Odesa throughout December 2025 has targeted essential infrastructure, storage facilities, and power grids, aiming to sever Ukraine's primary economic gateway to the global market. During a visit to Mar-a-Lago to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, Zelenskyy emphasized the need for Patriot missile systems to protect the Black Sea trade corridor, which handles approximately 90% of Ukraine's agricultural exports. Analysts suggest Moscow has shifted its strategy toward aerial attrition to bypass maritime defenses and weaken the Ukrainian economy.

Economic impact on the 76-million-ton trade route

Odesa remains a vital pillar of the Ukrainian economy, with its six regional ports handling nearly 76 million tons of cargo in the first 11 months of 2025 alone. Zelenskyy warned that Russia's primary objective is to decouple Odesa from the country's infrastructure, thereby reducing export capacity and impacting both the population and the broader economy. Despite Ukraine successfully deterring the Russian Black Sea Fleet using maritime drones, the constant barrage from the air—often launched from Crimea to bypass overland defenses—continues to pose a severe threat.

Record-breaking drone warfare in 2025

Data from the Centre for Information Resilience indicates that Russia launched approximately 52,000 drone attacks against Ukraine in 2025, a massive increase from the 14,000 total recorded between 2022 and 2024. Military analyst Oleksandr Kovalenko described the Black Sea as Ukraine's "weak point," noting that the very waters that feed the economy also leave it vulnerable to sophisticated aerial tactics. As winter intensifies, these strikes have left Odesa residents without electricity, heat, or water for extended periods due to the city's reliance on external energy sources.

Systemic destruction of logistics and railways

The assault on Ukraine's export logistics extends beyond maritime ports to the national railway network. Serhiy Vovk, Director of the Center for Transport Strategies, noted that Odesa serves as the "final exit gate," making it the most accessible target for Russian forces seeking to dismantle the logistics chain. The state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, reported that infrastructure damage has reached $5.8 billion since the conflict began, with over 1,100 attacks recorded against the rail network in 2025 alone.
