ANKARA, TURKEY — Journalist Müyesser Yıldız reported that the raw 60-page transcript of the November 24 meeting with the PKK leader was condensed into a disputed 4-page summary, sparking claims of political manipulation.
The discrepancy between the original transcripts and the published summaries has triggered sharp reactions across the political spectrum. While the initial 4-page summary was defended by MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli, a subsequent 16-page version later emerged, confirming many details that were previously dismissed as false or distorted.
Discrepancies in official summaries
According to the report, the raw transcripts of the meeting between three members of parliament and the PKK leader were allegedly edited by parliamentary bureaucrats under the direction of Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş. Critics, including MP Cengiz Çandar, have labeled the 4-page summary as a "scrap of paper" with no documentary value, claiming it inaccurately reflected the leader's actual statements regarding Syria and the SDG.
The released transcripts suggest that the PKK leader compared his political standing to that of Bahçeli within their respective movements. Furthermore, he allegedly warned that his exclusion from the political process would make a "100-year Turkish-Kurdish war" inevitable, while comparing his view of martyr families to Atatürk’s perspective on ANZAC soldiers.
Regional autonomy and Syria policy
The transcripts reveal contentious discussions regarding the future of northern Syria and the "commune" model. The PKK leader reportedly proposed a model of local democracy and "democratic municipalism" for both Turkey and Syria, suggesting that a central power cannot exist without regional local democracy.
He specifically mentioned that the SDG (Syrian Democratic Forces) would likely listen to him but would not act unilaterally, emphasizing the need for a "sharing model" concerning oil resources and border gates. These statements have raised concerns regarding the potential for new autocratic structures in Syria if democratic conditions and local governance are not established.
The controversy of the symbolic gift
Despite the lack of a clear call for the Syrian PKK (YPG/SDG) to disarm, MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli accepted a symbolic "Peace and Democracy Kilim" sent by the PKK leader. Bahçeli reportedly thanked the leader for his "sincerity" regarding Turkish-Kurdish unity, naming the gift the "February 27, 2025 Peace and Democracy Kilim".
This development has been interpreted by some government-aligned analysts as a sign that Ankara has not abandoned its İmralı-centered process management. Conversely, DEM Party co-chair Tuncer Bakırhan criticized the release of the transcripts as a "cheap political calculation" designed to manipulate public opinion against the process.
