COPENHAGEN, DENMARK — Sweden and Denmark have announced a joint initiative to bolster Ukraine's defenses against intensifying Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure by supplying TRIDON Mk2 air defense systems worth 245 million euros.

The defense ministers of both Scandinavian nations revealed the plan on Tuesday, confirming the joint procurement of the mobile anti-aircraft artillery systems. Sweden will cover the majority of the cost, contributing 2.1 billion Swedish kronor of the total 2.6 billion kronor package, with Denmark funding the remainder.

Tailored for modern warfare

Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson emphasized the strategic value of the donation, noting that the system is specifically capable of neutralizing cruise missiles and long-range attack drones. "This is a capacity that Ukrainians need due to the increase in Russia's long-range attack capabilities," Jonson stated in Gothenburg.

Jonson highlighted that the TRIDON Mk2 system was developed in "record time" and adapted based on combat experiences from Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. The donation is reportedly substantial enough to allow Kyiv to establish its own dedicated air defense battalion.

Critical timing for energy defense

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen added that the contribution would strengthen Ukraine's air defense capacity, which has been under "heavy pressure in recent months".

The announcement comes at a critical juncture as Ukraine faces some of the most severe electricity, heating, and water outages since the war began nearly four years ago. Russia has systematically targeted the country's energy grid, pushing it toward a potential humanitarian crisis during the freezing winter months.

Despite a reported decrease in the number of drones and missiles used by Russia in January, a recent analysis indicates that the attacks continue to effectively cripple critical energy facilities, leaving millions without power.

On Tuesday alone, Russia launched approximately 450 drones and 70 missiles at targets across Ukraine, marking one of the largest attack waves of the war. This escalation occurred just ahead of planned US-brokered peace talks in Abu Dhabi.
