Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Major General Kyrylo Budanov, the Chief of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, as the new Head of the Presidential Office following the resignation of Andriy Yermak.
This high-profile appointment marks a significant shift in Kyiv's administrative focus amidst the ongoing conflict. President Zelenskyy stated that the primary rationale behind the decision is to prioritize national security issues, the development of the Defense and Security Forces, and the monitoring of negotiation processes.
Focus on strategic defense and negotiations
In his announcement, Zelenskyy emphasized that Budanov’s extensive experience in military intelligence is vital for his new role. The Presidential Office is now expected to play a central part in updating and executing the nation's security and defense strategies.
"Kyrylo has the experience and strength to perform duties in these areas," Zelenskyy said in a statement. "I have instructed the new Head of the Presidential Office to update and submit for approval the strategic foundations and steps for the defense and development of our state."
Coordination with the National Security Council
Under the new leadership structure, Budanov is tasked with working closely with the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine and other relevant institutions. Analysts view this move as an effort to deepen the integration between military intelligence and political decision-making mechanisms. Budanov is expected to take an active role in both managing frontline developments and preparing the technical infrastructure for international negotiations.
