In Kosovo’s snap general elections, the incumbent Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s Self-Determination Movement (Vetevendosje) has declared a resounding victory, securing 49.62% of the total vote. With approximately 98% of the ballots counted, Kurti described the outcome as a landmark achievement that sets a new precedent in the nation’s political history.
Addressing a jubilant crowd at the party’s headquarters in Pristina, Kurti announced that the process of forming a new government would commence immediately following the official certification of the results.
Parliamentary Arithmetic and Vote Distribution
According to data released by the Kosovo Central Election Commission (CEC), Vetevendosje maintained a significant lead over its rivals. The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) followed in second place with 21.17%, while the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) secured 13.68%. The Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) garnered 5.71% of the vote.
The voter turnout was recorded at 44.99%, a figure that does not yet include conditional ballots, postal votes, or those cast at international representative offices.
Minority Representation and Coalition Prospects
The Kosovo Democratic Turkish Party (KDTP), which competed for the two seats reserved for the Turkish minority in the 120-seat parliament, received 0.62% of the vote (5,332 votes). Political analysts suggest that Vetevendosje is well-positioned to form a stable majority by renewing its coalition with minority parties, including the KDTP, as it has done in previous terms.
Kurti expressed his expectation for cooperation from opposition parties in the new legislative term, particularly for the ratification of international agreements that require a two-thirds majority.
A Peaceful Electoral Process
Kosovo Police reported that the election day concluded peacefully across the country, with no major incidents or disruptions to the democratic process. A total of 24 political entities competed for the 120 seats in the Assembly for a four-year term. This victory marks the third consecutive general election in which Vetevendosje has emerged as the largest political force in Kosovo.
