Contact Group pledges 35 billion euro military aid to Kyiv

BY AHMET TAŞ | WISE NEWS PRESS

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM — The Ukraine Defense Contact Group, a coalition of approximately 50 nations including Turkey and Germany, announced on Thursday that it will provide 35 billion euros in military assistance to Kyiv for the year 2026.

This commitment aims to coordinate and sustain military support for Ukraine as it continues its defense efforts. According to sources within NATO, the 35 billion euro figure represents a new commitment intended to be provided in addition to previously announced aid packages.

Official statements and financial commitments

UK Defense Secretary John Healey, representing a core member of the group, announced the pledge following a meeting held in Brussels. The announcement underscores the long-term planning of the coalition to ensure Ukraine remains equipped through 2026.

While the group moves forward with this massive total, individual country contributions are still being finalized. Germany, one of the leading contributors to the group, had previously announced an 11.5 billion euro budget for Ukraine for 2026. However, during Thursday's meeting, there was no confirmation as to whether Germany would increase this specific amount in light of the new 35 billion euro total.

NATO's perspective on sustained support

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte provided context for these figures, emphasizing that international support must remain robust. Rutte noted that military aid provided to Ukraine last year totaled 45 billion euros. He further stated that the total amount of aid for 2026 should ideally exceed that previous threshold to maintain the momentum of Kyiv's defense.

Key weapon systems remain at the forefront of these discussions:

  • Military aid continues to include heavy weaponry such as howitzers.

  • Coordination is focused on ensuring equipment reaches the front lines efficiently.

  • The coalition provides a vital platform for approximately 50 nations to align their logistics.

The evolution of the Ramstein Format

The Ukraine Defense Contact Group, often referred to as the "Ramstein Format," held its first meeting on April 26, 2022, at the U.S. Air Base in Ramstein, Germany. Since its inception, the group has served as the primary vehicle for coordinating international military hardware deliveries to Ukraine.

The leadership of the group has seen a significant shift during the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. While the United States remains a member of the coalition, it has stepped back from its initial leading role. Consequently, the formation is now jointly managed and led by Germany and the United Kingdom.
