Germany Activates Arrow 3 Defense Shield Against Russian Missile Threats
Germany has operationalized the Israeli-made Arrow 3 system at Holzdorf air base to intercept ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere amid rising tensions.
WISE NEWS PRESS / BERLIN, GERMANY — Dec. 5, 2025
Germany has officially commissioned the Israeli-made Arrow 3 air defense system, capable of intercepting long-range ballistic missiles outside the earth's atmosphere.
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent shift in the global security architecture, Germany has moved to overhaul its defense strategy. As a tangible result of the "Zeitenwende" (Turning Point) policy announced in 2022, Arrow 3 aims to close a critical gap in European air defense and strengthen NATO integration against potential high-altitude threats.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony for the first unit, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius highlighted that the new system provides Germany with early warning and protection capabilities against long-range ballistic missiles for the first time.
Holzdorf base and strategic positioning
The Holzdorf military air base, located near the town of Schönewalde south of Berlin, was selected as the first deployment site. situated at the intersection of the Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, and Saxony states, the base will also serve as a test center for personnel training and integration with the NATO air defense network.
The battery at Holzdorf marks the starting point of a nationwide defense shield. According to current plans, two additional deployment sites will be established in the states of Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein. The Arrow 3 system is expected to reach full operational capability by 2030.

"Hit-to-Kill" technology and specs
Jointly developed by Israel and the United States, Arrow 3 operates on a "Hit-to-Kill" principle. The system neutralizes target missiles through kinetic impact rather than using an explosive warhead. This method minimizes the risk of debris fallout over populated areas, particularly when intercepting missiles potentially carrying nuclear, biological, or chemical warheads.
According to technical data, the system features:
-
Altitude: Approximately 100 kilometers (boundary of space).
-
Range: Protection coverage of up to 2,400 kilometers.
-
Speed: Capability to intercept modern ballistic missiles (such as the Russian Sarmat) that can exceed speeds of 20,000 km/h.
Arrow 3 will function as the top tier of a multi-layered air defense architecture, working in conjunction with Germany's existing short-range IRIS-T and medium-range Patriot systems.
European Sky Shield and costs
The activation of Arrow 3 is considered a critical milestone for the German-led "European Sky Shield Initiative" (ESSI). Germany, becoming the first country outside of Israel to operate the system, acquired it for approximately €3.3 billion. The agreement, signed in September 2023, stands as the largest defense export deal in Israel's history.
