Middle East Crisis Deepens: UN Security Council Convenes Urgently

ANKARA, TURKIYE — The simultaneous air operation launched by the United States and Israel against Iranian territory has sparked a global diplomatic firestorm, prompting the United Nations (UN) Security Council to schedule an emergency meeting for midnight tonight to address the escalating military conflict.

Immediately following the strikes, a joint condemnation was issued from London, Paris, and Berlin. The emergency session, requested by Bahrain, Colombia, China, Russia, and France, aims to re-establish diplomatic channels to halt the "dangerous escalation" in the region. As smoke rises over Tehran and military movements intensify, the international community is largely urging "maximum restraint" and the protection of civilians in what has become one of the most significant geopolitical crises of 2026.

Joint Condemnation from Western Allies

The United Kingdom, France, and Germany issued a joint declaration strongly condemning Iran's activities toward regional countries. While clarifying that they did not participate in the operation, the three nations emphasized being in "close contact with international partners," including the US and Israel. The statement called on the Tehran administration to end its nuclear program, restrict its ballistic missile capabilities, and cease destabilizing regional activities and domestic oppression.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the negotiating table remains an option if Tehran abandons its policies of violence and pressure. Starmer also confirmed that the Royal Air Force (RAF) is active in the skies as part of coordinated regional defense operations, stating, "Our forces are active, and we are increasing our defensive capabilities."

Emergency UN Session and International Warnings

UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock described the military escalation as "extremely dangerous" and called for an immediate de-escalation. Invoking the UN Charter, Baerbock emphasized that states must refrain from the use of force against the territorial integrity and political independence of others. She reminded all parties that concerns regarding Iran's nuclear program and human rights violations must be addressed within the framework of international law.

Prior to the Security Council meeting, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and High Representative Kaja Kallas issued similar warnings. Kallas announced that the EU’s Aspides mission in the Red Sea is on "high alert" and ready to ensure the safety of maritime corridors.

Regional Reactions and Calls for Restraint

While Ankara invited all parties to end military actions, the reaction from Saudi Arabia underscored the severity of the tension. Riyadh declared "full solidarity" with Gulf nations against potential Iranian threats and warned that continued violations of international law would have "serious consequences." Although calling for diplomacy, the Saudi administration explicitly stated that it "reserves its right to self-defense."

Conversely, leaders such as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued messages of solidarity with the Iranian people while criticizing the regime's oppressive policies. Countries like Ukraine and Kosovo expressed open support for the operation, arguing that the Iranian regime has terrorized the region for decades.

Sharp Response from Russia and Pakistan

The strongest opposition to the strikes came from Moscow and Islamabad. The Russian Foreign Ministry defined the operation as a "pre-planned and unjustified armed action against a sovereign and independent UN member state." In a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the US and Israel had ignored international legal norms, warning that the situation could lead to a "humanitarian and possibly radiological catastrophe."

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar similarly condemned the strikes as "illegitimate." Both Moscow and Islamabad emphasized that the responsibility for the disruption of regional and global stability lies with the forces that initiated the operation, demanding an immediate return to political and diplomatic solutions.
