PKK/SDG and PJAK escalate regional activities amid peace talks
Regional escalations by PKK affiliates in Syria and Iran have raised serious security concerns and intensified criticism regarding Turkey's domestic peace process.
WISE NEWS PRESS / ANKARA, TURKEY
Recent escalations by PKK-affiliated groups in Syria and Iran, coupled with provocative statements from organization leaders, have triggered a wave of criticism regarding the feasibility of the ongoing "disarmament" and "peace process" discussions in Turkey.
While domestic debates in Ankara focus on the potential for the PKK to dissolve itself, developments on the ground suggest that the organization is instead leveraging regional instability to strengthen its positions. Specifically, efforts by the SDG/PKK in northern Syria to integrate with the Damascus administration and PJAK's calls for intensified uprising in Iran indicate a strategic shift toward regional entrenchment rather than disarmament.
Accusations of sabotage in Syria
Sipan Hemo, a high-ranking member of the SDG/PKK, claimed in recent statements that negotiations to integrate QSD forces into the Syrian national army were nearing a conclusion under international mediation. However, Hemo accused Turkish intelligence (MIT) of deliberately sabotaging these efforts through high-level meetings in Damascus. Affiliate media outlets alleged that Turkish officials influenced the Syrian Ministry of Defense to launch operations against QSD-controlled neighborhoods, such as Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh, to disrupt the integration process.
PJAK targets Iranian central authority
Simultaneously, the PKK’s Iranian wing, PJAK, has positioned the current civil unrest in Iran as a strategic "opportunity" for Kurdish groups. Amir Karimi, the co-chair of PJAK, described the Iranian state as being in a state of "brain death," arguing that the weakening of Tehran’s central authority allows for the expansion of revolutionary activities. In a written statement, PJAK characterized the ongoing protests as a "democratic uprising" and urged for a direct confrontation between the public and government security forces to push the regime toward total collapse.
Security concerns over the peace process
These regional maneuvers have caused significant unease in Turkey, where a parliamentary commission recently visited Imrali for discussions with Abdullah Öcalan. Critics argue that while the Turkish public is being told "tales of peace," the terror organization is actively being bolstered across the borders in Syria and Iran. Security experts warn that the PKK remains far from dissolving itself, and its continued growth in neighboring territories poses an increasingly complex threat to Turkey’s long-term national security.
