Russia strikes Ukraine with Oreshnik missile at 13,000 km/h
Russia targeted the western city of Lviv with its nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile, while heavy strikes on Kyiv left four dead and nineteen injured early Friday.
WISE NEWS PRESS / KYIV, UKRAINE
Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Ukraine in the early hours of Friday, deploying its new-generation intermediate-range ballistic missile, the "Oreshnik," which is capable of carrying nuclear warheads. According to the Ukrainian Air Force's Western Command, the missile targeted the western city of Lviv, reaching speeds of approximately 13,000 kilometers per hour.
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi confirmed that Moscow used Oreshnik missiles to target critical infrastructure within the city. The Oreshnik—which translates to "hazel tree" in Russian—is one of Moscow's newest strategic weapons, specifically designed with high-velocity capabilities to bypass modern air defense systems.
Fatalities reported in Kyiv
Simultaneous with the strike on Lviv, Russia launched a concentrated attack on the capital city, Kyiv, involving 36 missiles and 242 various types of drones. The assault resulted in four deaths and 19 injuries. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that a paramedic was killed while assisting civilians in the Darnytskyi district, where four other health workers were also injured.
Widespread damage was reported across multiple neighborhoods, including Desnyanskyi and Dnipro, where residential buildings and high-rise apartment roofs were hit. Local authorities stated that fallen drone debris sparked several fires, leading to significant electricity and water outages in parts of the capital.
Kremlin cites 'retaliation' for Putin residence
The Kremlin defended the use of the Oreshnik missile as a "retaliation" for an alleged attempt by Ukraine last month to target President Vladimir Putin’s residence. However, both Kyiv and Washington have denied these claims. CIA assessments, supported by US President Donald Trump, concluded that Ukraine did not attempt to target Putin’s residence.
Zelenskyy calls for vigilance amid freezing conditions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the nation on Thursday evening, warning of the large-scale attack. Zelenskyy noted that Russia is attempting to exploit the current freezing weather and icy road conditions, which hamper civilian movement. He urged citizens to prioritize safety and move to shelters immediately upon hearing air raid sirens, as the threat of continued ballistic strikes remains high.
