WASHINGTON, USA — US President Donald Trump announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin accepted a request to halt military operations in Ukraine for one week due to life-threatening extreme cold weather conditions.
The humanitarian pause, announced during an executive order signing ceremony at the White House on January 30, 2026, aims to provide relief as freezing temperatures grip the region. President Trump noted that the request was made specifically to address the welfare of those affected by the harsh winter environment, a gesture that Moscow has reportedly agreed to honor for the next seven days.
Humanitarian pause amid extreme cold
During the ceremony in the Oval Office, which primarily focused on a presidential decree regarding drug enforcement, Trump pivoted to international diplomacy to share the outcome of his conversation with Putin. "I asked him not to fire on Ukraine for a week because of the extreme cold," Trump stated, confirming that the Russian leader had accepted the proposal. This temporary cessation of hostilities is expected to allow for urgent humanitarian aid and civilian protection during the current cold wave.
Progress in Abu Dhabi peace negotiations
Beyond the immediate ceasefire, President Trump expressed optimism regarding a more permanent resolution to the conflict. He indicated that "great progress" is being made in the ongoing peace negotiations currently held in Abu Dhabi. Trump emphasized his hope for a definitive end to the war, suggesting that the current diplomatic momentum is at an all-time high.
Steve Witkoff, the President's Special Representative who was present at the signing, echoed these sentiments. Witkoff stated that the negotiation teams have covered significant ground and explicitly credited Trump’s personal intervention for the breakthroughs achieved in the diplomatic process. The international community continues to monitor the Abu Dhabi talks closely as the one-week pause takes effect.
