Turkiye explores defense pact with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan
Bloomberg reports Turkiye is in advanced talks to join a strategic defense alliance with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, potentially shifting global power balances.

Turkiye is reportedly in advanced discussions to join a strategic defense alliance between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, a move that could fundamentally alter the geopolitical balance in the Middle East and South Asia. According to sources cited by Bloomberg, Ankara views this tripartite initiative as a vital deterrent at a time of increasing uncertainty regarding traditional NATO commitments and regional security risks.
A New Defense Architecture in the Region
The potential pact is built upon an agreement signed between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in September 2025, which includes a mutual defense clause stating that an "attack on one member is considered an attack on all." For Turkiye, which maintains the second-largest standing army in NATO, joining this framework would expand the alliance's scope across South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Analysts suggest this move is partly driven by a perceived need for strategic alternatives as U.S. foreign policy shifts toward more isolationist or Israel-centric priorities.
Combining Financial Might and Nuclear Deterrence
Experts highlight that the proposed alliance brings together highly complementary assets: Saudi Arabia’s financial power, Pakistan’s nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities, and Turkiye’s extensive military experience and advanced defense industry. Nihat Ali Ozcan, a strategist at the Ankara-based think tank TEPAV, noted that regional dynamics are increasingly forcing nations to establish new self-reliant security mechanisms. This partnership is expected to deepen existing ties, such as Turkiye's construction of MILGEM-class corvettes for the Pakistani Navy and the potential inclusion of Riyadh and Islamabad in the KAAN fifth-generation fighter jet program.
Strategic Shifts Amid Regional Tensions
The acceleration of these talks follows a period of heightened friction in South Asia, including brief border skirmishes between Pakistan and India in early 2025. Furthermore, the alliance marks a "golden age" in Turkiye-Saudi relations, which have evolved from ideological rivalry to deep economic and military synergy. While all three nations maintain concerns regarding Iranian influence, they reportedly favor a collective engagement strategy over direct confrontation, focusing instead on stabilizing Sunni-led regions and supporting Palestinian statehood.
