Who is Delcy Rodriguez, Venezuela's new  Tigress leader?

WISE NEWS PRESS / CARACAS, VENEZUELA

Delcy Rodriguez, the influential Vice President of Venezuela, has emerged as the nation's key power broker following the capture and extraction of Nicolas Maduro by United States forces.

Appointed as interim president by the Supreme Court with the backing of the military, Rodriguez initially struck a defiant tone against the US raid. However, she quickly pivoted toward diplomatic pragmatism, inviting Washington to work on "cooperation focused on strengthening coexistence in accordance with international law," emphasizing peace and dialogue over conflict. Known for her sharp rhetoric and staunch left-wing nationalism, Rodriguez—nicknamed "The Tigress"—now faces the daunting task of navigating new threats from the Donald Trump administration while maintaining domestic control.

Daughter of a Marxist revolutionary

Born in Caracas in 1969, Delcy Eloina Rodriguez Gomez is the daughter of Jorge Antonio Rodriguez, a Marxist guerrilla leader who died in police custody in 1976. This family legacy propelled her and her brother, Jorge Rodriguez, to the heights of the Chavismo movement. A lawyer by training, she has held strategic positions including Minister of Economy, Foreign Affairs, and head of Intelligence. Political analysts, such as Pedro Benitez, describe her as one of Maduro’s few trusted inner-circle members who at times wielded more influence than the president himself.

Allegations of secret negotiations

Despite her public anti-imperialist stance, rumors of clandestine talks between the Rodriguez siblings and Washington have surfaced. Reports from the Miami Herald suggested that Delcy and Jorge had proposed a transition government without Maduro months ago. While Rodriguez dismissed these claims as "lies and vultures," her immediate openness to negotiation following Maduro's arrest has intensified speculation regarding a pre-arranged political shift.

International sanctions and the "Maduro Commission"

Unlike Maduro or Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, Delcy Rodriguez is not on the US DEA’s "most wanted" list. However, she remains under heavy sanctions by both the US and the EU for "undermining democracy" and "human rights violations." She currently co-chairs a commission alongside her brother Jorge—the current President of the National Assembly—aimed at securing the release of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, while simultaneously managing the nation's volatile relationship with the global superpower.

Interim leader Delcy Rodriguez called for international cooperation during a critical turning point for Venezuela, Caracas.
